چکیده

The performance of an innovative pilot-scale subsurface flow compost wetland for the attenuation of zinc in mine drainage was investigated. The particular novelty of the system, which operated under ambient environmental conditions, was the short hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 7.5 – 14.5 hours. Short HRT is crucial because it reduces absolute wetland size and construction cost, which can be major impediments to use of wetlands. Over a 2 year period mean treatment efficiency was 67.5% (total Zn) and

Pilot-scale passive bioreactors for the treatment of acid mine drainage: efficiency of mushroom compost vs. mixed substrates for metal removal.

Pilot-scale field-testing of passive bioreactors was performed to evaluate the efficiency of a mixture of four substrates (cow manure compost, mushroom compost, sawdust, and rice straw) relative to mushroom compost alone, and of the effect of the Fe/Mn ratio, during the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) over a 174-day period. Three 141 L columns, filled with either mushroom compost or the f...

Experimental Study on Wetland Hydraulic Characteristics of Vegetated Drainage Ditches

Small vegetated drainage ditches play an important role in water and nutrient removal, but may cause water blocking problems. The aim of this study was to investigate vegetated drainage ditches’ hydraulic and wetland hydraulic characters. Field experiment were carried out, small drainage ditches with Juncus, Zizania latifolia, and Acorus calamus were selected under different water flows, and a ...

Metal retention mechanisms for the Aznalcóllar permeable reactive barrier (SW Spain)

A permeable reactive barrier, consisting of a mixture of compost and calcite gravel, was built in Aznalcóllar (SW Spain) to treat acidic groundwater containing zinc, aluminium and copper. Monitoring results show that practically no dissolved sulphate is reduced as water flows through the barrier, which has a residence time of about 1 to 2 days. Despite this lack of bacterial activity significan...

Comparison of Treatment Performance between Constructed Wetlands with Different Plants

Constructed wetlands have gained much importance for treating domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes and are considered as an effective secondary or tertiary treatment method. The main characteristics affect the removal efficiency of constructed wetland are the vegetation type, hydraulic residence time and substrate. The aim of the present study is to examine effect of vegetation type on ...

The Revival of a Failed Constructed Wetland Treating a High Fe Load Amd

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mines has significantly impaired water quality in eastern Kentucky. A small surface flow wetland constructed in 1989 .: to reduce AMD effects and subsequently failed after six months of operation was :‘ renovated by incorporating anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) and anaerobic subsurface drains promoting vertical flow through successive alkalinity producing ...
